Professor Gibson's twenty years in industry provided him with a wide range of experience, including liquid crystals, triboelectric charging, conducting polymers, photoconductors, solvatochronic materials, and membranes. His general research interests range from synthetic to physical (e.g., kinetic, mechanistic) studies of organic and polymeric materials, typically with a view toward developing molecular design criteria for tailoredphysical and/or chemical characteristics. The present research activities in the Gibson group can be divided into the following areas: Novel Dendritic Systems, Controlled/"Living" Free Radical Polymerizations, Supramolecular Self-Assembly, Polyrotaxane Systems and Novel Fullerene Derivatives.
