TEXT:  Analytical Chemistry for Life Sciences Laboratory Manual and Notebook, Fall 2001 (bookstore).
LABS:  Each lab starts at 1:00.  Monday’s Briefing ­ Pamplin 2001, Thursday ­ McBryde 329, and Friday ­ Pamplin 1002.    PLEASE, DO NOT BE LATE!  After briefing, the labs are held in Davidson 123-C, Quant Lab.  Labs run until 3:50.

PRE-LAB BRIEFING:  A prelab briefing will be given at the beginning of each laboratory.  Students must have the Introduction and Experimental sections of their notebooks completed before they enter in the laboratory. HOMEWORK ­ 1 page sheets due at start of each pre-lab briefing.

ATTENDANCE:  Attendance is mandatory for both the pre-lab lectures as well as the laboratory.  Roll will be taken.  You may not switch laboratory sections or pre-lab lectures without permission of new lab supervisor (see above).

SCHEDULE: SEE ATTACHED SCHEDULE.  Make-up laboratories will be offered only to students having valid excused absences, (determined by your GTA).

CREDITS:  1 Credit. The Lecture course Chem 3114 is mandatory.

PREREQUISITES:  Chem 1035 & 1036 sequence.
 

CONTENT: This lab covers fundamental methods of quantitative chemical analysis.  Emphasis is placed on classical wet methods and titrimetry (acid-base, redox, and complexametric), and instrumental methods of electrochemistry, spectroscopy, and chromatography.

LABORAT0RY:  Work will consist of 10 graded laboratory assignments.  Two labs (4 and 6) require formal reports (details will follow).  Your laboratory notebook must be reviewed and signed by the T.A. before you leave lab.  Your notebook will be reviewed several times during the semester.
 
GRADING:   8 Homework (preparation for lab) 5 pts. each, drop one (lowest), total 35 points.
                      2 formal reports(labs 4 and 6) - 80 pts. (40 pts. each one)
                      8 informal reports, 6 of 20 pts., 2 of 10 pts., 140 pts.
                      Lab notebooks - graded 2 times (10pts.each) 20pts. total
                      Total 275 points.
                      Lab reports are due 1 week after the completion of the experiment.  A penalty
                       of 10%/wk will be levied against late reports.

HONOR CODE: You are expected to abide by the honor code in all work concerning the laboratory. The falsification of laboratory results or entries in laboratory notebooks will be treated as a violation of the honor code.  Plagiarism in laboratory reports is considered an honor code violation.
