Analytical Services  Our analytical services labs (ASL) encompass NMR Spectroscopy, Mass Spectrometry, and Infrared Spectroscopy.  A key feature of all our labs is the availability of talented and highly dedicated technical staff members to keep the instruments well-maintained and help students design cutting-edge experiments.

NMR Instruments

  • Bruker 600 (multinuclear, PFG, CP-MAS)
  • JEOL EclipsePlus 500 (multinuclear, VT, PFG)
  • Varian UnityPlus 400 (multinuclear, VT)
  • Varian Inova 400 (multinuclear, VT, PFG, robot)
  • Varian wide-bore 400 (includes imaging probe)
  • Bruker Avance 300 (dedicated to solid-state)

Mass Spectrometry Instruments

  • Agilent LC-ESI-TOF with accurate mass capability and full-robotic capability
  • Thermo TSQ LC-ESI-Triple Quad
  • HP MSD low-resolution GCMS

IR Instrument

  • Midac FTIR (single bounce diamond ATR)
  • Midac FTIR (transmission)

Surface Analysis Laboratory.  The surface lab feastures a Physical Electronics 5400 X-ray Photoelectron Spectrometer (XPS or ESCA), a PHI Scanning Auger Spectrometer (AES), and a scanning electron microscopy.  Many more microscopy instruments (AFM, TEM, etc.) are located in various research groups throughout the department and in the ICTAS Nanoscale Fabrication and Characterization Center on campus.

X-ray Crystallography.  The X-ray lab is a College of Science facility that features five diffractometers.  One is dedicated to small-molecule analysis for the chemistry department.  This instrument is a state-of-the-art Oxford Diffraction XCalibur3 Four-Circle Diffractometer with an Atlas CCD detector and low-temperature capability (down to 15 K).

Electronics Facility.  The facility features two electrical engineers who work mostly with computers and networks, and a specialist who repairs electronic and electromechanical equipment in support of research in the department.

Glass Shop.  The shop is staffed by a full-time master glassblower.

Machine Shop.  A fully-outfitted and expertly staffed machine shop is located in the Physics Department which is next door to chemistry.  Other machining capability is housed in the nearby Engineering Science and Mechanics Department.
